How Much Pizza to Order for a Party of 20, 50 or 100
The number one question we get on the phone before a party is simple: how much pizza for a party is actually enough? It’s a fair question. Nobody wants to run out an hour in.
Order too little and people go hungry. Order too much and you’re eating cold pizza all week. Getting it right is part math and part knowing your crowd, and we’ll walk you through both.
Below you’ll find the numbers we’d use for a birthday of 20, a company picnic of 50 or a graduation party of 100.
The Simple Pizza-Per-Person Rule
Start with how many slices each guest will probably eat. Here’s what we see most of the time:
- Adults: 2-3 slices each
- Teenagers: 3-4 slices each (don’t underestimate them)
- Kids under 10: 1-2 slices each
- Mixed crowd: about 2.5 slices a person
A round pie is usually cut into 8 slices. So take your guest count, multiply by 2.5, then divide by 8. That’s your number of pies.
Example: 40 guests x 2.5 slices = 100 slices. Divide by 8 and you need about 13 pies.
That’s the starting point. There’s a bit more to it, though.
How Much Pizza You Need, by Party Size
How much pizza for a party of 20?
For 20 people, get 6-7 pies. That’s 48-56 slices, enough for a mix of adults and teens with a little left over.
A good split is 3 cheese, 2 pepperoni and 1-2 specialty pies. Cheese always goes first, so don’t go light on it. Add a salad and some garlic knots and the table looks full.
Tip: If it’s a dinner party and not an afternoon hangout, add 10-15%. People eat more at night.
How much pizza for a party of 30?
For 30 people, plan on 9-10 pies, roughly 75 slices. Go with 4 cheese, 3 pepperoni and 2-3 specialty.
This is where sides start to matter. If pizza’s the main event, put out a salad, wings or knots so people have something to grab between slices.
How much pizza for a party of 50?
At 50 guests, stacks of round boxes get awkward. You’d need 15-17 pies (about 125 slices). A lot of hosts switch to trays at this point because they’re easier to carry, set out and serve.
If you go with trays, 4-5 full trays can cover it. Add a pasta tray and a salad and you’ve got a real spread. Treat it like a catering order, not a pizza run. Our party trays are set up for exactly this kind of crowd.
Tip for 50 guests: Split the order. Have the first round show up as people settle in and a second round about two hours later. Everything stays hot.
How much pizza for a party of 75?
For 75 people, figure 22-25 pies or 6-8 trays. For a rough idea of cost, our cheese pie is $16.95, so 22-25 plain cheese pies runs about $373-$424 before toppings, sides or tax.
Add two pasta trays, two salads and a few appetizers. With this many people, folks go back for seconds, so variety keeps the table interesting.
How much pizza for a party of 100?
At 100 guests, the order is its own project. You’re looking at 30 or more pies, or around 10 trays.
Timing, delivery, keeping food hot and setup matter as much as the count. For an order this big, call us instead of ordering online. We’ll help you work out quantities and timing.
How much pizza for 150-200 guests?
Past 150 people, you’re planning a full catered event. Think a mix of trays, a couple of food stations and food arriving in waves. Call us one to two weeks ahead so we can plan it with you.
What Changes the Pizza Math
The numbers above assume an average crowd on an average day. Here’s what moves them.
Time of day
Dinner crowds eat more than afternoon crowds. Add 10-15% for an evening party. For lunch or a late afternoon thing, you can pull back a little.
Other food on the table
If pizza’s the only thing there, order more. If you’ve also got pasta, wings, salad or dessert, people eat fewer slices and you can cut back.
How long the party runs
A two-hour party and a five-hour party aren’t the same. Longer parties need more food, and it helps to have it come in two rounds: one at the start, one about two hours in.
Who’s coming
Some groups just eat more. Teenagers, sports teams and active crowds always beat the average. Office lunches and family parties with grandparents and little kids usually eat less. You know your people. Adjust.
Trays vs. Round Pies
For 30 or more guests, rectangular trays are often easier than round pies. Here’s a rough general guide to how far a tray goes:
| Tray Size | Feeds |
|---|---|
| Small tray | 8-10 people |
| Half tray | 10-12 people |
| Full tray | 16-20 people |
Trays sit nicely on a buffet table, they’re easy to portion and you don’t end up with a tower of 20 boxes. For current tray options, check our catering trays or just give us a call.
How Far Ahead Should You Order?
Timing matters as much as the count. Our advice:
- 10-25 guests: order at least 24 hours ahead
- 50+ guests: order 48-72 hours ahead
- Weekends and busy times: up to a week ahead
Calling early gives the kitchen time to plan for a big order, and it means fewer surprises for you on party day.
Party Pizza Checklist
Before you place the order, run through this:
- Count slices per person for your crowd (adults, teens, kids).
- Check the time of day. Dinner crowds eat more.
- Count the other food you’re serving.
- Think about trays for 30 or more people.
- Mix it up. Aim for about half cheese and pepperoni, half specialty.
- Have a vegetarian option. Somebody always needs one.
- Order about 10% more than you think. Leftovers beat running out.
- Plan drinks. Figure about one drink per person per hour.
- Order early. A day ahead at minimum, up to a week for big orders.
- Get extra napkins. You’ll use more than you think.

Our Advice Before You Order
When you’re not sure, get a little more. Running short hurts a party. Leftovers are just tomorrow’s lunch.
Use 2.5 slices a person as your base. Then go up or down for the time of day, the other food, how long it runs and who’s coming. Mix up the pies, include a vegetarian option and call early for big orders.
